MSUNGAMA CHARGED WITH SEDITION: POLICE HUNTING FOR KABWILA, CHAKHWANTHA

Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) member Ulemu Msungama who was arrested on Sunday has been charged with Sedition contrary to Section 51 of the Penal Code

National Police Spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa has confirmed of the development in an interview with the Press.

Msungama was arrested on Sunday over the leaked Whatssap message where he alleged that there is need for a regime change, saying President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has failed to run the country.

But Msungama claims that the WhatsApp messages were doctored to ensure arbitrary arrests for government critics and opposition MCP members.

Gondwa has also confirmed that Police are hunting for MCP’s publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila and Lewis Chakhwantha on similar charges as those of Msungama.

A visit by FaceofMalawi reporter at Kanengo police station this morning found MCP officials flanked by Juliana Lunguzi chanting anti- DPP songs at the station and Police officers are all over.

On Sunday, Police stormed Kabwila’s house where they found her mother Valencia and she told the Police that Kabwila has not been at the house since Friday.

In the string of WhatsApp messages linked the MCP, they are, for instance, said to have conspired to pursue the Arab Spring-like revolution to overthrow president Mutharika and his government.

They are said to have been infuriated by what they see as the president’s failure to end a stinging food crisis that has seen maize prices triple in just under a few months and inflation exceed over 20%. The kwacha has also sharply fallen.

The MCP officials are said to have agreed to take advantage of the situation to call for a rebellion that would appear to have been sparked by Malawians in diaspora.
