MUTHARIKA CONDEMNS INCREASING CASES OF MOB JUSTICES IN MALAWI

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has condemned increasing case of Mob Justices in the country, saying the acts is uncalled for and must not be tolerated.

Mutharika’s remarks follow an incident in Chinyonga Township in the commercial capital Blantyre where irate mob torched to death two suspected thieves on Monday night and another incident in Dedza where angry villagers invade a Police station to administer mob Justice on a suspected murderer.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Mutharika said he is deeply shocked with trends of killing and torching to death of suspects, all in the name of mob justice.

“I would like to condemn these acts in the strongest terms.

“Let perpetrators of these acts be reminded that this malpractice is against the rule of law and natural justice and will receive the utmost attention it deserves,” said Mutharika.

Mutharika further urged Malawians to desist from such malpractices, saying the law does not entertain mob justice.

“I urge all Malawians to refrain from mob justice as one cannot be a complainant, who is investigating their own case, and presiding over the case on their own, and implement their judgment.

“I would therefore like to appeal to all individuals, groups, civil society organisations, companies and government agencies to partner with the Malawi Police Service in the fight against these criminal trends,” said Mutharika.

Since President Mutharika ascended to the high office, Malawi has experienced a sharp increase in mob justices and all this has been attributed to Malawi Police’s failure to handle crimes in the country.
