President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will on Saturday, 27th August 2016, attend the consecration of the Bishop elect for Mzuzu diocese, Father John Ryan.

Presidential Press Secretary Mgeme Kalirani confirmed of the development in a statement made available to FaceofMalawi seen by this reporter, saying the president is scheduled to attend the function which is expected to take place at St Peter’s Cathedral in Mzuzu.

The consecration mass will be led by Bishop Dr Martin Mtumbuka as the principal consecrator and will be assisted by Archbishops Tarcizius Ziyaye of the Lilongwe Archdiocese and Thomas Msusa of Blantyre Archdiocese.

His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Father John Ryan as the new Bishop of the diocese on April 26, 2016 in Rome followed the death of the then Bishop of the diocese Bishop Joseph Zuza who died in a car accident on January 2015 when he was travelling from his home village in Mzimba.

Monsignor Michael Muwowo who is the diocesan administrator for Mzuzu diocese, has been the caretaker of the diocese since the death of late Bishop Zuza.

Reverend Fr Ryan was born on 27th February, 1952 in Trippery, Ireland. He was ordained priest on 18th June, 1978.

He has served as a missionary in Malawi in several parishes in Mzuzu, Karonga and other parts of the northern region. He is currently serving as Chaplain of Mzuzu University where he is also a Lecturer of mathematics.

The function is expected to be attended by all Catholic Bishops of the country, government officials, and catholic faithful from all the eight dioceses of the country among others.
