Father John Ryan to be ordained Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese on Saturday

People from all walks of life will this Saturday flocking to Mzuzu Diocese in the north to witness the consecration of the newly elected Bishop of the diocese Reverend Father John Ryan.

Father Ryan was appointed Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese in April by Pope Francis following the death of late Bishop Joseph Zuza in January 2015.

Zuza died in a tragic in Chikangawa forest while on his way to Mzuzu from his home Village and the Diocese has been without a Bishop since then.

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and his Vice Dr. Saulosi Chilima are expected to attend the ordination of Father Ryan

Facts about Mzuzu Diocese

The Diocese of Mzuzu was originally part of Apostolic Prefecture of Northern Nyasa and was erected as a Diocese on 17 January, 1961.

Bishop Jean Louis Jobidon who was a Missionary of Africa (White Father), was consecrated the first bishop of the diocese on 22 May, 1961.

Upon the retirement of Bishop Jobidon, Father John Roche was appointed Apostolic Administrator in 1987.

On 3rd March, 1995 Father Joseph Mukasa Zuza was appointed Bishop of the Diocese.

Bishop Zuza (May His Soul Rest In Peace) was tragically killed in a road accident on January 15, 2015 and the Diocese has been without a Bishop since then.

The Diocese comprises the northern districts of Rumphi, Mzimba, Nkhata Bay and part of the central district region of Kasungu.

In total, the Diocese has 11 parishes.
