Two people arrested for obtaining Malawi’s citizenship illegally

Two people have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly aiding and obtaining Malawian citizenship illegally.

ACB Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala confirmed of the arrest in a statement made available to Faceofmalawi and identified the suspects as Hendrix Laher, a Malawian and Esili Kubwimana, a Rwandese.

According to Ndala, Laher is being accused of helping Immigration officials to abuse their office while the Rwandan Elisi Kubwimana has been arrested for providing false information to public officers.

“On 25th September, 2015, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that on 14th May, 2014, the then Chief Immigration Officer granted Malawi Citizenship to Rwandan Nationals using a file belonging to another foreign national.

“The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations and established that citizenships were granted to people who were not eligible,” reads in part the statement.

The two are expected to appear in court once the Bureau has recorded caution statements.

Recently the ACB arrested opposition Peoples Party (PP) Interim President Uladi Mussa and former Immigration boss Hudson Mankhwala on the same case.

But Mussa denied the charge leveled against him and described the arrest as political witch-hunt by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
