DPP, MCP Kasungu funeral fracas update: Chief Lukwa summons MP Nkhata

Chief Lukwa of Kasungu has summoned Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Kasungu Central Amon Nkhata for allegedly being involved in the fracas that erupted at a funeral service ceremony of the chief’s mother.

Pandemonium erupted on Saturday at the funeral of Chief Lukwa’s mother between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and MCP.

It all started when district governor for the DPP Oswech Chirwa forcebly grabbed a microphone from Kasungu central MP (MCP) Amon Nkhata who wanted to announce to the mourners how much the MCP had given as condolence money.

Nkhata was not allowed to make the announcement and violence ensued.

The development did not please mourners who retaliated by stoning some DPP supporters including President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s advisor Hetherwick Ntaba.

Speaking in an interview with the press, Chief Lukwa said the family is not pleased with what happened at the funeral of his mother hence the summoning of MP Nkhata.

According to Lukwa, the Nkhata flouted the procedures at the funeral where politicians were not supposed to speak accept those from the ruling DPP.

When asked as to why he did not summon Chirwa who provoked the situation, Chief Lukwa said Chirwa did nothing wrong.

He said the family could have also snatched the microphone from Nkhata.

On his part, Nkhata said he will honour the invitation
.
“I respect Chief Lukwa and all chiefs in Malawi, there is no way I can turn down the invitation,” said Nkhata.

Meanwhile analysts in the country have criticized the ruling DPP for bribing the chiefs to attack critics.
