Dausi Suggests a Measure of Dealing with Albino Killings

Following the recent killing of a person with albinism identified as McDonald Masambuka, the country’s minister of Information and Communications Technology Honorable Nicholas Dausi has requested the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) to propose to international rights defenders to put in place a death penalty that should be imposed to people found guilty of Killing albinos.

The minister said this during the presentation of his sorrowful speech at the burial ceremony of late Masambuka in Machinga yesterday where he was among other people in attendance.

Dausi was heard saying the government has tried to bring in stiff laws that should be handed to every person found in abuse of people living with all sorts of disabilities including albinism because by doing so, cases of this kind would become a stale.

On the other side, the APAM Country Coordinator Boniface Massa blasted the Malawi police for not putting in much effort in protection of people with albinism.

Massa questioned if the alleged albino killers were better than Malawi police officers in such a way that it takes long for the officers to trace such people when someone with albinism has been abducted as it was in Masambuka’s.

In defense, Deputy National Police Publicist Thomas Nyaude  dismissed Massa’s claims saying that police is always fighting hard to end the unnecessary behavior.

He said the problem is because some stakeholders fighting against this behavior are only doing it alone without the help of others.

Masambuka had gone missing on March 9 after he went to a trading Centre to buy a mart.

Police and other people had tried to search for him until his remains were found during the Easter holiday. So far, police have managed to arrest 12 people including their fellow officer who is suspected to have played a role in abduction and killing of Masambuka.
