CSOs plead with Parliament to reject Jose’s appointment as police IG

Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) Executive Director Timothy Mtambo has Parliamentarians to reject the appointment of Rodney Jose as Inspector General (IG) of the Malawi Police Service.

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika appointed Jose in April replacing Lexten Kachama who is currently on leave.

Jose’s appointment attracted mixed reactions among Malawians with many questioning his appointment considering the fact that Jose is implicated in the gruesome murder of a fourth year student at Polytechnic, Robert Chasowa.

According to information at hand, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Cecilia Chazama is today scheduled to table a motion asking Parliamentarians to confirm Jose’s appointment in the August House.

Speaking in an interview with Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) Mtambo asked MPs to turn down Jose’s confirmation.

According to Mtambo, Parliamentarians should wait for the conclusion of the murder case of Robert Chasowa.

“Jose is named in the Commission of Inquiry instituted by Dr. Joyce Banda on the murder of Robert Chasowa so let the courts clear his name first,” said Mtambo.

Mtambo has also question Jose’s leadership, saying reign of office has witnessed a number of attacks by ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

He cited the attack of two Zodiak reporters in Mzuzu, teargasing of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters in Blantyre and the violence that happened at Parliament.
