Father Takes Authorities to Task over Daughter’s Defilement Matter

A father to a 17-year-old girl who was at Ntungulutsi Primary School in Zomba has asked authorities to take action against a teacher who has impregnated his daughter.

Speaking to Malawi News Agency (Mana) Sunday in an interview, Victor Ching’ande of Chiganga Village, Sub Traditional Authority Nkapita said he is concerned with the way the issue is being handled by Primary Education Advisor for Ntungulutsi Zone.

He said despite reporting the issue to the head teacher of Kampalira Primary School where the teacher is teaching, Primary Education Advisor (PEA) and Sub T/A Nkapita, nothing has been done, urging organizations to come in.

“I am looking forward to seeing justice prevailing on the matter. My daughter was supposed to start form 1 this academic year as she has just passed her standard 8 exams,” he said.

However, Primary Education Advisor for the area, Readson Kumtenga expressed ignorance of any case involving a teacher impregnating a school going girl in his Zone.

Kuntenga said what he knows is that the zone registered a similar case in 2016 in which the involved teacher was suspended and removed from the government pay roll.

On the recent issue, Kumtenga said the alleged teacher Paul Lusangasi has been transferred from Kampalira to Mlonde Primary School based on absenteeism and underperformance grounds.

In an interview, Sub T/A Nkapita said it is worrisome to learn that people who are supposed to be in the forefront protecting the girl child are the ones disrupting their future.

The chief said he called for a meeting with the accused teacher, the head teacher and the PEA on the matter where the suspect admitted that he has had sexual intercourse with the girl.

“It appears that the PEA is shielding the teacher because we all met with the accused teacher and he admitted that he really had sexual intercourse with her,” Nkapita said.

The traditional leader said he will carry out a thorough follow up of the issue in order to make sure that justice takes its course on the matter.

According to findings, the accused teacher, Paul Lusangasi, has allegedly impregnated two girls: one at Kampalira Primary School and another one at Ntungulutsi Primary School.

Executive Director for Chinseu Community Care, Mathews Naphazi confirmed having records of the case.

Naphazi said, there are several cases in the area of similar nature involving various leaders of the community but justice is failing to take its course.

He said apart from a teacher impregnating a school going girl, there were also cases of similar nature involving close relatives.

Child Protection Worker for Chingale, Welos Chikwili confirmed having received a report of the case adding that he is following the issue with keen interest.

Chikwili expressed concern over the increase of such cases where authorities are taking advantage of poverty to have sex with girls.
