Well-known businessman Alfred Gangata on Thursday pulled out of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) primaries at the 11 hour in Lilongwe City Centre Constituency.

Gangata was scheduled to face well-known rapper Tay Grin, a son to Minister of Lands and Housing Development Jean Kalilani.

But Gangata pulled out of the race, paving way to Tay-Grin real name Limbani Kalilani to go unchallenged.

The development means Kalilani will represent the ruling DPP in the forthcoming 2019 tripartite election.

Writing on his official facebook page, Kalilani hailed Gangata for his gesture.

“A man of true honor, Alfred Gangata, has displayed his class by supporting my candidature. This means the DPP primary elections which were supposed to take place will not go ahead. Gangata has shown true leadership by opting to withdraw in support of my candidature.

“I want Mr Gangata to receive my heartfelt thanks, admiration and respect. Together we are showing the nation that DPP represents the team work that is very important in every sphere of life. Inspired by such graciousness and the privilege to serve as your representative for Lilongwe City Center, I therefore ask all members to appreciate this gesture by uniting in our bid to strengthen our party. We can only achieve our goals when we work together,” wrote Kalilani.

Last week the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Constituency David Bisnowarty also pulled out of the primaries and wished the competing candidates well.

Bisnowaty has since switched the constituency.
