The Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC has announced 2-3 February as aspiring candidates
for the May 21 Tripartite Elections verification days. This has been arranged for pre-
inspection of nomination papers.
The aim of this exercise is to ensure that all nomination papers have been filled correctly and that if there any anomalies and deficiencies, aspiring candidates should be advised to correct them whilst there is time.
Public Relations Officer for MEC Sangwani Mwafulirwa has said the exercise will avoid the situation of discovering such anomalies and deficiencies on the nomination day and the panic caused.
“During the pre-inspection period, all Parliamentary and Local Government Elections aspiring candidates (independent or party sponsored) or their representatives should present their nomination papers to their respective Constituency Returning Officers (CROs).”
Through a statement Mwafulirwa say; “All presidential candidates or their representatives should present their nomination papers to the MEC head office in Blantyre.
The pre-inspection exercise is an administrative arrangement but very important. Candidates are advised that here is no need to mobilize supporters to escort them to the venues.”
There is no specific schedule drawn and candidates or their representatives are free to come at their convenient time.
“This is a very important exercise and the Commission is, therefore, encouraging all aspiring candidates to participate. In the event that a candidate is unable to make it to the pre-inspection centre, the are strongly encouraged to delegate their representatives.”
The Commission is further advising all candidates to take advantage of this pre-inspection exercise to fix their preferred time for presentation of nomination papers to the CROs, if they have not yet.
