Constitutional court Okays MCP to amend May 21 polls case query

The Constitution Court has granted Malawi Congress Party (MCP) consent to amend its petition from a vote-recount to presidential re-run.

The court has also given a nod to an application by party President, Lazarus Chakwera to access tally sheets and computer systems for the May 21 Presidential Elections.

Besides, the court has also granted the applicants can access names of data entry clerks for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

However, the five-judge-panel has turned down an application by Chakwera to access bank statements for the clerks. The court has also turned down an application to have the the electoral commission dissolved in the case that the case goes in favor of the applicants.

Applicants in the case are MCP president, Chakwera and UTM leader, Saulos Chilima while respondents are MEC and President Peter Mutharika.

Meanwhile the case is scheduled to commence on July 29, 2019.
