Malawi College of Health Sciences students threaten strike

Students at Malawi College of Health Sciences (MCHS) have threatened to conduct demonstrations if the Ministry of Health will not intervene in reopening the college’s campuses.

Speaking to the press, MCHS Mother Union President Iso Ken Bond said they are currently waiting for the response from their school principal following a meeting they had with the ministry of health.

“The executive director, Piyason Namachotsa told us to wait because he would be having a meeting with Principle Secretary for Ministry of Health, Dr Dan Namalika so we are just waiting for what they will discuss otherwise what we want is to go back to school,” Bond said.

Reacting on the matter, Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Health Dr Dan Namalika assured the students that they should not panic as government has addressed some of the demands raised by the staff members of the colleges.

About two weeks ago, MCHS Students Union gave Ministry of Health and Population an ultimatum of five days to reopen the college’s campuses failing which they will demonstrate at the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC).

The college’s campuses were closed in March this year following a strike by the members of the staff.

The workers are demanding implementation of a new salary structure, remittance of pension arrears to Nico Company as well as to be put on life cover.
