Newly elected MCP MP Afred Jiya arrested in Lilongwe, one MCP supporter shot by Police

Newly-elected MCP Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City Central Constituency, Alfred Jiya, has been arrested in the on-going running battles between party supporters in Lilongwe.

MCP Organizing Secretary Khumbidze Kandodo Chiponda confirmed of the arrest in an interview with the press, saying Jiya is currently being kept at Lilongwe Police Station.

In a related development, One MCP supporter is currently receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital after being shot by police.

The victim has been identified as Saadi Muhajila.

MCP supporters led by its President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera are against the outcome of the May 21 polls which saw Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declaring President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika a winner.

Chakwera wants the outcome of the Presidential polls nullified.
