Judge Potani warns radio stations covering election case

High Court Judge Healey Potani who is chairing the panel has warned all radio stations that will abuse the live coverage of the proceedings by among others, airing programmes discussing the proceedings, saying they will be barred from live coverage.

Potani said this today during the commencement of the presidential case where Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Saulos Chilima are challenging the outcome of the May 21 polls.

The Judge urged all broadcasters namely; MIJ FM, Zodiak Broadcasting Stations (ZBS), Times Group and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to avoid airing edited proceedings of the case, saying this tendency has the potential of distorting the whole case.

He said any radio station found doing so will be barred from covering live the case.

Meanwhile the case has been adjourned to 2pm where the panel of 5 judges namely Ivy Kamanga, Healey Potani, Mike Tembo, Redson Kapindu and Dingiswayo Madise will give ruling for an application made by Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale to have the case adjourned for 6 days.
