CHIKWAWA – A 62-year-old man in Chikwawa has committed suicide to escape an arrest after assaulting his 56-year-old wife whom he accused of cheating on him.
The man identified as Kasiyano Chimangeni, hanged himself on Tuesday on Mazongoza Island.
A son to the deceased told police that, on Saturday, his father and mother went out farming at the island.
Whilst there, a quarrel ensued as Chimangeni accused his wife of going out with another man.
“He picked up a stick and heavily assaulted her, leaving her sustaining a fractured arm.
The victim was taken to Ngabu Rural Hospital before being referred to Chikwawa District Hospital.” Sgt Foster Benjamin narrated
“She was discharged on Tuesday and returned to the farming where she couldn’t find the husband.
Later on, Chimangeni was found hanging on a piece of chitenje wrap from a tree.
He was discovered dead by his daughter and other women who were fetching relish and firewood.” Sgt Benjamin added
Police and medical personnel visited the scene and established that Chimangeni had died of suffocation.
Chimangeni came from Malikopo village in Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa District.
Meanwhile, police are advising the community to channel their marital grievances to relevant authorities other than ending their own lives.
