HRDC Promises More Demos ‘We will not back down’

Organizers of Anti-Ansah demonstrations, Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) have said they will not back down from organizing the protests, challenges they will not back down to anything.

Chairperson for the coalition Timothy Mtambo together with his deputy Gift Trapence made the promise on Wednesday in Lilongwe during their first press briefing as they have just arrived in the country from Gambia.

Mtambo and Trapence also trashed rumors  they went outside the country to seek asylum after threats on their lives by suspected government operatives.

Mtambo and Trapence have for the past three weeks been in the Gambia for official duties at the African Commission for People’s and Human Rights.

Trapence said the organisation will meet this week to announce their next course of action. He said Malawians should expect more demonstrations.

“We were away for the past three weeks not that we have given up on the cause. We are still fighting for the resignation of Ansah. Malawians should trust us that the journey that we started will only stop when the Mec chairperson resigns. Malawians should be assured that we are planning more protests,” he said.

He further said the duo wanted the outside world to know the real issues that are happening in Malawi hence their trip to the Gambia where they attended a conference that, among other things, focused on human rights.

“In the past three weeks, we also had to inform other international partners and other key players on what Malawians are doing and what is going on in the country because we wanted the international partners to also focus on Malawi because there are so many issues that are happening in Malawi,” he said.

HRDC has been holding demonstrations in order to force Ansah’s resignation arguing she did not ably handle the May 21 tripartite elections.
