Alfandika Confirms The Use of Tipp-Ex in May 21 Polls

First witness for the second respondent in the on-going presidential elections, Sam Alfandika who is Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chief Elections Officer has conceded the use of Tipp-Ex in the May 21 tripartite elections.

However Alfandika could not tel the court who supplied the correctional fluid saying that the electoral body did not supply Tipp-ex.

Alfandika was answering to a question posed by Lawyer for the first petitioner United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Saulos Chilima, Marshal Chilenga who asked why erasing fluid Tipp-Ex was used in the May 21 polls.

Chilenga continued questioning Alfandika on whether he saw tippexed results, altered results and fake tally sheets.

Alfandika conceded that there were results erased using tippex, altered results, and A4 result sheets but denied that there were fake tally sheets.

Alfandika said he did not know where the tippex came from because the commission never bought the fluid.

He said the commission was surprised that there were tippexed results saying that is why the results went through heavy scrutiny.

Chilenga also quizzed Alfandika on why the commission used duplicate tally sheets and if the commission have copies of the original tally sheets but the Chief Elections Officer said it was the duty of presiding officers to keep the original tally sheets
