Two men have died after an illegal mine they were drilling at Mtiwule Village in the area of Traditional Authority Makanjira in Mangochi District collapsed on them on Thursday afternoon.
Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Roderick Maida, confirmed the incident but could not readily provide particulars of the two deceased men.
Maida says the two men were among people who have, for a long time, been drilling precious stones illegally in Mangochi District.
Due to rains in the area, the walls for the mine became wet and collapsed, trapping the two men in the process.
Some villagers who were alerted by fellow miners helped to remove bodies of the two.
Meanwhile, police has appealed to the public to avoid setting up illegal mines.
