ConCourt Ruling Fever: Analyst Suggests Monday Should be Declared a Public Holiday

A political and social commentator Makhumbo Munthali has suggested that Monday February 3 where Constitutional Court is expected to deliver its ruling on the presidential elections case be declared a public holiday.

Munthali made the suggestion on his Facebook page adding that if government will not consider declaring Monday a public holiday, the day will declare itself.

“Declare Monday a public holiday, if you don’t the day will declare itself,” Munthali said.

According to Munthali, he is in a strong view that Monday should have been declared a public holiday by government such that every Malawian including civil servants should be given an opportunity to listen to the court verdict in their respective homes.

“The matter before the Court borders on their right to vote and as such they need to follow through any decision (be it Judicial or whatever) that affects such a right,” added Munthali.

Defending his opinion, Munthali highlighted that allowing giving every Malawian an opportunity to listen to the verdict is a part and parcel of preparing the public o respect ‘whatever’ outcome that comes from the court.

“The Court verdict in this election case is no option, the decision that will be made on Monday will define the future of this country a future in which Civil servants are part of. Allowing every citizen to listen to the verdict rather than solely relying on social media analysis is part and parcel of preparing the public to respect whatever outcome that comes from the Court,” Explains Munthali.

United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Saulos Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera are the first and second petitioner respectively in the presidential elections case seeking nullification of the May 21, 2019 presidential polls.

On May 27, 2019 the electoral body Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declared Peter Mutharika, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate.
