Malawi’s Ministry of Health is keeping an eye on at least 4,000 people on self-quarantine who have arrived into the country over the past couple of days.
In its daily update, the ministry said as of March 28, Malawi’s borders in Mwanza and Dedza had let in 376 people, the majority of them travelling from South Africa and a few from Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
So far, 281 people that were quarantined have been released after testing negative. Malawi has yet to register a case of the virus.
Meanwhile, a bus travelling from South Africa arrived at Mwanza border with a dead body.
“Investigation revealed that the person is Malawian and left RSA while ill in order to seek medical attention in Malawi. Samples were collected and sent to College of Medicine Laboratory.
“All the people in the bus were screened and none had sign/symptoms of COVID-19. All have been put on self-quarantine,” the ministry further reported.
According to the report no new country has recorded any case of the virus.
South Africa, Malawi’s major trading partner has reported that, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is now 1280 with two deaths.
The government of Malawi has announced plans to close its borders to buses carrying passengers into the country effective 1st April
