Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda to deliver ruling on 21-day lockdown injunction next week

Date:

High Court Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda has said he will make his ruling on whether to sustain or dismiss the lockdown injunction by Wednesday next week.

The Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) on Friday last week obtained an injunction against a 21-day lockdown imposed by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to control the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Judge Nyirenda set today as the day for interparty hearing but the hearing went on without Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale.

After hearing from the complainants, Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda reserved his ruling on matter and set Wednesday as the day he will deliver his ruling on whether to sustain or dismiss the lockdown injunction.

He said the injunction granted to claimants still stands until a ruling is made otherwise.

Malawi has so far recorded 33 cases with three deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.
