Chilima Wants ConCourt to Decide MEC Commissioners Fate

In an effort to have Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioners fired, the state vice president Saulos Chilima is seeking the services of the Constitutional Court to decide their fate.

On February 3, 2020 a panel of five judges of the Constitutional Court nullified May 21, 2019 presidential elections and found the Commissioners incompetent following the role they prayed in the nullified polls.

However, the electoral body commissioners did not resign despite a number of recommendation for their dismissal from different stakeholders.

High Court judge, Ruth Chinangwa earlier put the case on hold in order to wait for the Supreme Court verdict on the appeal of the presidential elections case.

Chilima’s lawyer, Khumbo Soko has said that necessary arrangements to have the case file sent to the Chief Justice have been made on Tuesday.

Once it is looked into and certified, Soko believes it will then be heard by a constitutional panel of not less than three High Court judges.
