Malawi Experienced a Lost Year – Chakwera

Torchbearer of Tonse Alliance has described the one year between the nullified May 21, 2019 presidential elections as a lost year.

Yesterday the county clocked a year since Malawians went to polls to elect leaders of their choice starting from Councilors, Legislators and the president.

But on February 3, 2020 the Constitutional Court nullified presidential elections after finding out that it was mismanaged following massive anomalies that the court found after hearing the case.

Speaking during a whistle-stop campaign trail, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera said Malawians have been given an opportunity to correct their mistake.

He therefore urged people to go out and vote in large numbers adding that the Tonse Alliance is there to unite Malawians.

Chakwera said the alliance is not moved by the decision to bring the elections forward.

Malawians are expecting to go to polls on June 23 to elect the president following a court order that the fresh presidential elections should be held with the period of 150 days.

Meanwhile, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah as written the appointing authority President Peter Mutharika rendering her resignation letter as MEC chair.

Mutharika is yet to reply on Ansah’s request.
