Girl dies due to snake bite after made to sleep on the floor at quarantine centre

A six-year-old girl staying at a quarantine centre in Nainital, India died after she was sleeping on the floor. The girl was sleeping on the floor as the quarantine bed does not have beds.

The negligence of authorities at a quarantine centre claimed the life of a six-year-old girl in Nainital. The minor girl passed away allegedly after she was bitten by a snake at the quarantine centre.

The girl and her family had come from the national capital to Betalghat area of Nainital a few days ago. The girl and her family were quarantined after they reached Nainital.

The girl and her family were asked to stay at a government Inter college which was being used as a quarantine centre. Allegedly, the quarantine centre lacked facilities and the living conditions were abysmal.

Located away from the heart of Nainital, the quarantine centre lacks basic facilities like electricity. The facility did not have beds for the inmates and they had to sleep on the floor. Due to the same, the girl was bitten by a snake.

S Bansal, district magistrate called the incident “unfortunate”. He said that gram panchayat officials and teachers had been asked to conduct surveys of the quarantine centres but they failed in their duties. He urged the other officials to understand their duties and work towards ensuring the comfort of the inmates. Bansal said that compensation worth Rs 3 lakh will also be granted to the deceased’s family.
