A major security operation in north-western Mexico has triggered speculation about the possible capture of Aureliano Guzmán Loera, a senior figure linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and brother of Joaquín Guzmán.

The operation took place in the mountainous “Triángulo Dorado” region near the Sinaloa-Durango border, involving coordinated air and ground forces supported by Black Hawk helicopters and surveillance aircraft.

Security was also tightened in Culiacán, where airport operations were briefly limited to official flights during the raid.

Rumours of Guzmán Loera’s arrest spread quickly, but Mexico’s Defence Ministry later denied that he was among those detained.

Security official Omar García Harfuch confirmed arrests were made, though identities have not yet been disclosed due to ongoing investigations.

The incident highlights the long-standing notoriety of “El Guano,” who remains one of Mexico’s most wanted figures.

The U.S. government continues to offer a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his capture, citing his alleged role in large-scale drug trafficking operations.

Analysts say increasing fragmentation within the Sinaloa Cartel has fueled violence in the region, adding pressure on authorities as they continue efforts to dismantle rival factions.
