DPP Inherited Empty Fuel Reserves, Says Energy Minister Mathanga

Minister of Energy and Mining Jean Mathanga says the worsening fuel shortage in Malawi is partly due to challenges inherited by the current administration, including depleted fuel reserves.

Mathanga made the remarks on Friday during a press briefing organized by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA).

She assured the public that the situation is expected to improve, indicating that fuel availability should stabilize by next week.

On the government-to-government fuel procurement arrangement, Mathanga said the administration has abandoned the approach, citing the high foreign exchange requirements needed to secure large volumes of fuel.

The minister also addressed ongoing electricity blackouts, attributing them to a lack of maintenance at Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi over the past five years, as well as acts of sabotage.

The fuel shortages and power outages have continued to affect businesses and households across the country.
