Man in custody for scalding and injuring wife

Police in Dedza are keeping in custody a 24 year old man for stabbing his wife on the eye before scalding her with hot water.

According to Dedza Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sub Inspector Edward Kabango, the suspect has been identified as Petro Waiteni from Kapesi village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Kachere in Dedza.

“According to the wife, Yasinta Waiteni, the couple has been having disagreements since the suspect wanted to take another wife but the victim was refusing. On February 6,2020, the man was coming from a drinking joint around 20 hours and by then supper was not ready,” Kabango said

“Petro started beating her and produced a knife and he stabbed her on the left eye. He later took the boiling water and poured her body,

“Then the suspect locked the house to unknown destination for four days. Some well wishers informed the police who managed to rescue the woman and was taken to the hospital where she was admitted for two months,” he added.

The PRO said the suspect has since been charged with an offence of Acts intended to cause grevious harm and that he has pleaded guilty to the charge.

At the meantime, the victim is not able to walk due to the burns she suffered and she lost sight of the left eye.
