MHRC says elections were free and peaceful

The Chairperson Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), Reverend Patrick Semphere has applauded the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and Malawi Police (MPS) for professionalism showcased during fresh presidential elections.

Rev Semphere made the remarks during a press briefing that the commission had in Blantyre on proceeding of the fresh presidential election.

“The Commission finds that the elections were free and peaceful, we commend the Electoral Commission, MDF and police for professionalism,” he said.

Semphere has since called on winners to celebrate responsibly without inciting violence and losers should follow proper channel if they want to advance their complaints.

Currently, unofficial results indicate that Lazuru Chakwera of Tonse Alliance is leading and is second by Peter Mutharika of DPP-UDF alliance while Peter Kuwani of MDD who was on third position has conceded defeat.
