Police in Nkhotakota have arrested a 43-year-old man for allegedly selling dog meat to villagers while claiming it was African civet meat, locally known as “fungwe.”

The suspect, identified as Ishmael Ng’ondola, was arrested after community members reported the matter to Mpondagaga Police Unit.

According to police, the incident took place on May 18, 2026, at Njeza Village in Nkhotakota District.

Villagers became suspicious after noticing unusual characteristics of the meat sold by the suspect.

Community members later identified the meat as dog meat instead of the wild animal the suspect had claimed.

During investigations, police reportedly discovered a dog skin near the suspect’s house, strengthening suspicions against him.

Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Chisomo Chuma said the suspect is currently in custody awaiting court proceedings.

Ng’ondola is expected to answer charges related to the sale of noxious or unwholesome food.
