The Department of Disaster Management Affairs DoDMA has moved in to assist the 52 households in Nkhata Bay whose houses and property were torched in a fracas over land which saw two people killed on Monday.
Group Village Headman Nkungulo and Village Headwoman Kalonga, who thanked government for the timely response, say the affected villagers are still in desperate need of temporary shelters, clothes, soap and other sanitary materials for women.
District Disaster Officer Taonga Kamanga has confirmed to Zodiak Online that each of the affected families has received a 50 Kilogram bag of rice, a plastic bucket, four plastic plates and five plastic cups together with 9.5 meter plastic roll for roofing.
Police Officer-In-Charge for Nkhata Bay, Assistant Commissioner Macpherson Nthenda has assured the community of continued police presence in the area to ensure the restoration of peace, law and order.
