Govt to support traders whose merchandise was destroyed by fire at Mitundu market

The government has pledged to support over 140 traders whose merchandise was destroyed by the fire that gutted Mitundu market last Thursday.

The cause of the fire, which happened at night, is not yet known but some traders suspect an electrical fault.

Most shops were burnt to ashes and some people took advantage of the situation to steal some items.

Minister of Local Government Lingson Belekanyama visited the market over the weekend to appreciate the extent of the damage.

But Belekanyama did not specify the actual support to be provided to the traders.

The Malawi News Agency reports that the minister noted that the fire spread rapidly because most of the shops were grass thatched
