Woman Forced To Wear Unwashed Clothes Of Deceased Mother-In-law Ends Life By Suicide

A woman from Mumbai who was allegedly forced to live in abysmal conditions by her in-laws hanged herself to death on Monday. The 27-year-old woman was allegedly forced to wear her deceased mother-in-law’s unwashed clothes by her in-laws.

One day after the woman hanged herself to death in Tardeo, her father approached the police and lodged a complaint. The deceased woman was identified as Harshali. She was a native of Jalgaon.

On December 1, 2019, Harshali got married and started living with her in-laws. Allegedly, the accused started harassing the woman one day after her marriage.

As the woman’s sister-in-law managed the expenses of the wedding reception, she often criticised her and asked other members of the family to shun her.

One day, Harshali’s sister-in-law forced her to wear an old sari that belonged to her mother-in-law who had passed away 10 years ago.

The woman was forced to wear the saree even as it was emanating a foul smell. Harshali’s in-laws allegedly continued to harass her, The Indian Express reported.

Tired of being subjected to indifference, Harshali hanged herself to death when her father-in-law, brother-in-law and husband were watching an IPL match. At around 5.30 am when Harshali’s father-in-law was unable to enter the room, he called other members of the family and the suicide came to light.

Senior Inspector Firoz Bagwan of Tardeo police station said, “In their complaint, the father has said due to constant harassment, the woman decided to end her life. We have initiated our investigation and, accordingly, make arrests in the case.” The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
