Speaker elected into Preparatory Committee for Speakers Conference

The Right Honourable Catherine Gotani Hara, MP, Speaker of the Malawi National Assembly, has been elected as a Member of the Preparatory Committee for the 5th World Conference of Speakers to be held in Vienna in 2021.

The election of the Right Honourable Speaker took place on 2nd November, 2020 during the ongoing virtual meeting of the 206th Governing Council of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The Clerk of Parliament, Fiona Kalemba, said the Speaker was nominated by the SADC-Parliamentary Forum and was supported by all the six geopolitical groups of the IPU namely Africa Group, Arab Group, Asia-Pacific Group, Eurasia Group, Group of Latin America and the Caribbean and the Twelve Plus Group.

The Office of the Clerk of Parliament has since congratulated the Right Honourable Speaker wishing her all the best in her additional role as a Member of this very important Committee of the IPU.

The IPU Governing Council consists of over 170 Speakers and Presiding Officers drawn from various member countries across the world.
