Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has dedicated the victory in the Tuesday’s by-election in Karonga Central Constituency to late Dr Cornelius Mwalwanda who died of Coronavirus two months ago.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Tuesday held by-election in Karonga Central Constituency, Lilongwe North West and Makhuwira Ward in the Southern part of Malawi.

Despite holding the by-election in the mentioned three places the main battle was in Karonga Central Constituency where two main parties in the Tonse Alliance namely the Malawi Congress party (MCP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) tussled for a seat.

UTM fielded former Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) candidate Frank Tumpale Mwenefumbo who was the runningmate of United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi in the nullifed May 21, 2019 presidential polls while MCP fielded Leonard Mwalwanda, son to late Dr. Cornelius Mwalwanda.

Mwalwanda outclassed Mwenefumbo after amassing 6763 votes against 6021 votes.

writing on his official facebook page, MCP Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka dedicated the victory to late Mwalwanda.

“The win by Leonard Mwalwanda is an honour to Dr Cornelius Mwalwanda! May his beautiful soul continue resting in peace”, wrote Mkaka.

Mwenefumbo is yet to comment on the matter.

Meanwhile MEC will announce official results today in Lilongwe.
