South Africa’s national team footballer Motjeka Madisha dies in car accident

A 25-year-old South African star Motjeka Madisha has tragically died in a car accident on the 13th of December, 2020.

The Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana centre-back was involved in the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning in Johannesburg, two days after his former Downs teammate Anele Ngcongca was laid to rest having also died in a car crash in Durban on November 23.

The Mamelodi Sundowns defender managed to crawl out of the burning wreckage before he died, AFP news agency quoted an unnamed club official as saying.

Another person in the vehicle also died, local media reported.

National coach Molefi Ntseki said he was “gutted” by the death of the footballer in a “horrific” accident.

The South African police which confirmed the incident, said in a statement;

“It happened around 02:00 at Zuurfontein Road, Chloorkop next to ABC Auto parts. A scene of accident of a white BMW…Two occupants in the car were burnt and one of them was beyond recognition and were certified dead by Ekurhuleni Emergency Services.

“The car was travelling from the direction of Kempton Park towards Tembisa. Seemingly, driver lost control and the car hit a steel board displaying pole with the backside and caught flames.”

Madisha was a key Downs player this season, featuring in five PSL games and the MTN8 quarter-final defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic. He is also part of the South African National football team.

Tributes have poured in online following news of his tragic death.
