Former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has expressed shock over the untimely deaths of two Cabinet Ministers, Hon. Belekanyama who was Minister of Local Government and Hon. Sidik Mia who was Minister of Transport.

The two Ministers died of COVID-19 this morning.

Writing on his official facebook page Mutharika said he is deeply shocked with the deaths of the two.

“The former First Lady and I are saddened by the untimely demise of two Cabinet Ministers, Hon. Belekanyama who was Minister of Local Government and Hon. Sidik Mia who was Minister of Transport – due to COVID-19 related illnesses.

“Our condolences go to the President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, the entire Cabinet, the bereaved families and Malawi as a whole,” wrote Mutharika

He added: “The former First Lady and I wish to share with the entire nation that in difficult times as we are passing through, it is important to hold hands despite our differences. Together we can defeat this common enemy that is among us.

“Let me at this time suggest to the leadership and my fellow citizens, that we make the necessary tough decisions that can save ourselves and our nation.

“Above all, we pray to God for his healing hand and mercy to take us through this trying period.”
