Man killed in road accident in Mulanje

One person has died while another has been injured after being hit by a motor vehicle in Mulanje yesterday.

Mulanje Police Station Public Relation Officer Gresham Ngwira has confirmed and identified the deceased as Madalitso Mwarula, 19 while the one injured is Gift Maliana, both of Traditional Authority Mpindula in Mozambique.

Ngwira said on the fateful afternoon, Elijah Mbatata was driving a Freightliner truck from the direction of Ruo heading towards Muloza Border along Mulanje/Muloza M2 Road. Upon arrival at Muloza Trading Centre opposite Premier Bet Building, he hit the said pedestrians who were pushing bicycles towards the same direction.

Due to the impact, Mwarula sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Mulanje District Hospital. His friend sustained a cut wound on the face, bruises on both hands and legs and he is still receiving treatment at the same health facility.

Meanwhile, the driver is in custody for causing death by reckless driving.
