Fishermen Urged to Use Legal Fishing Nets, Chemicals

Fishermen in the country have been asked to avoid using illegal fish nets and chemicals when fishing.

The call has been made by an organization called Refresh.

Technician for the organization in Dedza Catherine Kamanga said today that some substances which fishermen pour into Lake Malawi for instance, kill small fish and illegal nets affect fish bleeding.

According to Kamanga, with funding from USAID, they are training fishermen to be independent and adopt best  fishing practices.

Chairpersons for the Fisheries Associations in Dedza and Mangochi Leonard Selevasi and Shadreck Mphande respectively have commended the organization for the project, saying they are learning a lot as fishermen.

Last week two police officers shot five people in Zomba who were fishing illegally laving thee of the dead.

Meanwhile, the police officers have been arrested.
