Human rights campaigners under the banner Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) are calling for the resignation of Kondwani Nankhumwa as leader of opposition in Parliament following his involvement in the infamous K6.2 billion covid-19 funds scandal.
The call has been made during a media briefing the coalition made today in the capital Lilongwe.
The past weeks, Nankhumwa who is also a member of the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19, held a press briefing accusing government of mismanaging the funds which were aimed at help the fight against the global pandemic.
In his remarks, Nankhumwa alleged that some district council did not receive the funds adding that in some councils the funds went missing immediately after transactions.
Following Nankhumwa’s allegations, a report bearing the name of Nankhumwa on how much he received in the name of Covid-19 allowances surfaced of which he accepted receiving the allowances but said he never signed anywhere.
Following the incident, HRD demanded that Nankhumwa should pay back the money.
HRDC has also threatened that if Nankhumwa fails to resign in the next 72 hours, the coalition will take unspecified action against him.
The coalition has added that the resignation will pave way investigations over his covid-19 funds benefits.
