ESCOM denies hiking electricity tariffs

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has trashed social media reports indicating that the power utility body has hiked prices of electricity.

On Wednesday the social media was awash with reports that prices of electricity has been hiked due to a rise in fuel pump prices.

The move created panic among consumers across the country who are now feeling pain brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

But ESCOM has described the rumours as false.

“Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited would like to inform its valued customers that it has not adjusted the price of electricity as suggested on some social media platforms. Be informed that ESCOM last adjusted the price of electricity in 2018.

“Customers may wish to know that such a process cannot be silently without the involvement of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority which grant or withholds permission for such adjustment,” reads in part the statement.
