Journalist Watipaso Mzungu released unconditionally

Well-known freelance Journalist Watipaso Mzungu was on Tuesday released unconditionally after being detained for over three hours at area 30 police headquarters in Lilongwe allegedly over a story that described the president as a joker, a time-waster and a comedian.

According to Mzungu, he was interrogated over the article he published on Nyasatimes quoting a statement from CDEDI which was reacting to Chakwera’s change of tune on cabinet appointment released on April 1, 2021.

“They asked for a raw copy of my story and correspondence with the director for CCEDI (Slyvester Namiwa) …I submitted everything they wanted. They said they thought I used strong language to describe the President as a comedian but I said I was only quoting a statement. After the interrogation the head of CID ordered my release unconditionally” explained Mzungu.

National Police Publicist James Kadadzera said he was aware of the issue but asked for more time before providing his comment.
