A 24-year-old Malawian man in Dowa district has been fined K50.000 by The Dowa Third Grade Magistrate’s Court for assaulting a 21-year-old woman.
State prosecutor Sub Inspector Benedict Mathambo told the court that the convict Mia Makala on April 13, 2021 at Chiwere Village in the district of Dowa unlawfully assaulted Beatrice Mussa occassioning her actual bodily harm after the two picked a quarrel on issues related to relationship.
Appearing before court on Thursday, the convict pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occassioning actual bodily harm contrary to Section 254 of the Penal Code.
In his submission, state prosecutor Sub Inspector Benedict Mathambo pleaded with the court to mete out a stiff punishment to the offender, saying the offence committed is serious in nature and that the sentence will deter others from committing similar offence.
Concurring with the state’s submission, Third Grade Magistrate Charity Simwaka sentenced the man to pay a fine of K50,000.00 or in default serve 12 months imprisonment with hard labour and the whole amount to be treated as a compensation to the victim.
Mia Makala comes from Chiwere Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District.
