One person killed in road accident in Machinga

A 23 year-old man, identified as Yohane Friday, has died in Machinga after being hit by a truck.

Confirming the accident, Machinga Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Tionge Kayenda, said the accident occurred on Sunday, May 9, 2021 at Machinga Trading Centre.

He said the truck, registration number AAP 200 SF/AD 638 FF HOWO, was being driven by Alfred Leonard, 43, from the direction of Zomba heading towards Liwonde with two passengers on board.

“Upon reaching Machinga Boma, due to over speeding, the vehicle started swerving and in the process, it ran into Machinga Police Road Block and five shops, killing one man who was sleeping in one of the shops,” Kayenda said.

Following the incident, Friday sustained head injuries and died on the spot. While the driver and the two passengers escaped with minor injuries and were treated as out-patients at Machinga District Hospital.

He also said the driver is in custody at Machinga Police Station and will appear in court to answer the charge of causing death due to reckless driving.

Meanwhile, Police are reminding all drivers to be observing speed limits to avoid such accidents.
