Government joins Unicef in ending child marriages campaign

The government of Malawi in collaboration with Unicef has launched the Multimedia Campaign on ending child Marriages in the country.

Speaking during the opening of the Launch at Bingu Conference Center in Lilongwe on Friday under the theme together we can end child marriages,the Director of Information Chikumbutso Mtumodzi who was the guest of honour said ‘’ We thought of using multimedia campaign to end Child marriages because the multimedia is the best channel of communication in the country.”

Mtumodzi further said pictures and programmes that will be aired on national broadcast radios will help in fighting against child marriages in the country.

In her remarks Unicef Country Manager Dr Parvina Muhamed Khojaeva said as Unicef their making sure that their coming up with different programmes on radio and television as one way of civic educate the national on how best they can protect the rights of children and ending child marriages.

Sophia Ntenda who is the Executive Deputy Director at Public Affairs Committee (PAC) said the lunch of the multimedia campaign is going to help the faith leaders not to bless the family of the young ones because in the past the faith leaders were just doing it without full knowledge.

The campaign has attracted religious leaders from different domination across the country.

The programme is running as a pilot project in 8 districts namely Chikwawa, Neno, Blantyre,Machinga, Mangochi, Kasungu and Nkhatabay.
