Zomba Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday convicted and Sentenced Biziwiki Namalindi, 18 from Tawakali Village in Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba.to nine years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 15-year-old girl.
The court, through State Prosecutor Sub Inspector Chimpanzi Katukwana of Zomba Police Station, said Namalindi had been defiling the girl since he illegally married her in 2020.
“The two were living as a family at Three Miles Township in Zomba City and some people reported them to Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) after seeing that the girl was too young to be in marriage,’’ Katukwana said.
Katukwana said the matter was reported to police by YONECO and upon investigation, the law enforcers arrested the man at the end of April for marrying the underaged girl, hence charged him with the offence of defilement which is contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
Appearing before the court, Biziwiki pleaded not guilty to the charge but the court found him guilty after the state paraded three witnesses who testified against the accused.
Passing judgement, Senior Resident Magistrate Christopher Makumba concurred with the state and therefore sentenced Biziwiki to nine years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL).
