Malawi Posts Corporation denies planning to retrench 500 workers

Malawi Posts Corporation (MPC) has distanced its self from a circular that the state owned company is planning to retrench over 500 employees.

On Thursday, the social media was awash with a circular dated July 12, 2021 calling upon workers interested to be retrenched to submit application letters expressing their interest.

The circular said the move will see 508 workers out of the 804 workers being fired from the institution.

Speaking in an interview with state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) MPC Spokesperson Ida Nkolimbo described the circular as fake.

She said the management is not yet decided on the matter.

But inside sources that opted for condition of anonymity hinted that the circular is not fake and some employees have been communicated on the matter.

MPC has a debt of over 9.3 billion Kwacha.

Recently the workers went on a national wide strike with an aim of forcing the management give them their salary arrears.
