Chakwera mourns Aleke Banda’s widow

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said he is deeply saddened with the passing of Mama Mbumba Margaret Banda, wife to late Aleke Banda.

Margaret Banda died of COVID-19 on Thursday at Partners in Hope hospital in Lilongwe.

In a statement released yesterday made available to faceofmalawi, Chakwera said Margaret Banda was a symbol of resilience in the struggle and an embodiment of democracy.

“We have fond memories of the last time we visited Mama Banda at their home at Tukombo in Nkhatabay and of the cordial relationship our families have had.

“Mama Banda was instrumental in the fight for democracy in Malawi, not only by supporting her late husband but taking an active role herself,” says the First Couple in a statement.

Bumba Banda will be laid to rest today in Chirimba, Blantyre.

The late Mbumba Banda senior was born on October 11, 1938.
