Man Wakes Up Thinking It’s 1999 With No Memory Of Last 20 Years

A man woke up believing he was in 1999 after having no memory of the last 20 years due to a brain condition.

In July 2020, Daniel Porter, 36, from Granbury, Texas, woke up with his wife Ruth, 37 with no recollection of who she was.

Daniel didn’t know where he was and assumed it was time to get ready for school. He had no memory of his wife or daughter, Libby, 10.

Ruth said: “He woke up one morning and just had no idea who I was or where he was. He was very confused.

“He thought he was either drunk and gone home with a woman or that he’d been kidnapped.

“I could see him looking for an escape route.

“I worked out he thought it was the 90s because he remembered a WWE programme, so I researched when that was aired.

“I helped him get dressed and he thought I was putting him in my husband’s clothes and my husband was going to come home any minute.

“He was angry when he looked at himself in the mirror. He was asking why he was old and fat.”

Ruth, did the sensible thing, and took her husband to hospital. It was then discovered that he had suffered Transient Global Amnesia, which is a temporary interruption of short-term memory.

However, the couple were told that he would get his memory back within 24 hours, which didn’t happen.

Tragically he forgot the moment he met the love of his life in 2006, at Walmart where they both worked. They then tied the knot in 2007.

Daniel had started having stress induced seizures after losing his job, just before the pandemic, and ended up selling his house to move in with his parents, after suffering a slipped disc in his back.

Ruth said: “We had a really traumatic year in 2019.

“Daniel lost his job so we sold our house and most of our possessions and we moved to Missouri for work but we didn’t get paid so we ended up stranded with no friends or family around.

“They were pretty violent at first. One messed up something in his back so he had a slipped disc and was in a lot of pain.

“He walks with a walking stick and a bit like an old man. He dealt with that for around six months and all this other stuff back to back and it was like his brain just said it didn’t want to do it anymore and just swiped 20 years of memories.

“He’s going to therapy to see if working through the trauma can help but it’s hard to work through stuff you can’t remember.”
