Congestion In Prisons Worry Authorities

Authorities at Mzuzu Prison say the fight against crime will remain far-fetched dream if challenges of overcrowding in the country’s reformation centres are not solved.

Officer-in-charge for Mzuzu Prison, Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Owen Levi made the remarks in Mzuzu when Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) donated personal protective equipment PPE’s to the institution.

“Mzuzu Prison was built decades ago with capacity to accommodate 329 prisoners.  But we are currently housing 749 inmates which is a danger to the prisoners considering issues of COVID-19 and other diseases,” said Levi.

He further called on Malawians to consider changing their way of living mostly those indulging in criminal acts for their good, community and country.

In his remarks MRCS Secretary General, McBain Kanongodza said they thought of assisting the prison considering that COVID-19 multiplies fast in overcrowding spaces like prisons.

Apart from donating the K7.5 million worthy of personal protective equipment to the prison, MRCS also donated the same to Mzuzu Central Hospital.

Mzuzu Central Hospital Principal Nursing officer, Jessy Kaunda commended the institution for the gesture which she said will go along way in provision of quality health care.
